A high-quality wool garment is an investment that stands the test of time and use – as long as you care for it properly. With over 160 years of experience in making wool clothing, Devold knows that small everyday actions will help you enjoy your product for years to come.
Here are easy instructions for caring for your wool products.
1. Air out – avoid unnecessary washing
The most important tip is not to wash your wool garment too often. Wool is naturally antibacterial, meaning it cleans itself and repels dirt. Most of the time, simply hanging your garment outside to air is enough – especially if it’s a sweater you wear with a base layer. Fresh outdoor air removes odors and restores the wool’s properties.

2. Wash only when necessary
Sometimes your garment will need washing. Follow these tips for best results:
- Use a detergent designed for wool. We offer several good options for wool care.
- Select the wool wash program (30°C or cold). The temperature and program are crucial! If you wash wool too hot, it will shrink. Even though it might seem similar, 30°C is not the same as 40°C (try it in the shower if you don’t believe it).
- Avoid fabric softener and strong spinning.
- If washing by hand, gently squeeze out excess water – do not wring or twist forcefully!
3. Shape gently and dry properly
- Reshape the garment while damp to its original form. Do not overstretch.
- Dry flat on an airy surface, especially if it’s a heavy wool sweater, to avoid stretching. Lightweight merino base layers can be dried on a hanger if needed. The most important thing is not to hang a very wet and heavy item, as it may lose its shape.
- Since wool shrinks from excessive heat, avoid tumble drying and direct sunlight.
4. Remove pilling gently
It’s important to understand and accept that wool may pill with use – this is not a sign of poor quality. Pills can be removed gently by hand, or with a special tool or device. A fabric comb or shaver is an easy option. Avoid constant use of a pill remover to prevent thinning the fabric.
5. Store properly
Always store wool garments clean and dry in your wardrobe.
Protect them from pests, for example, in a sealed bag or box.
6. Wear with confidence
Wool is naturally antibacterial, breathable, and warm. The more you wear it, the more comfortable it becomes! If you haven’t tried a merino wool T-shirt for summer hiking, we recommend it! Merino wool is cool in the heat and warm in the cold – even when damp. That’s why it’s a year-round favorite for many and suitable for various activities.
